100th British soldier died in Afghansistan this year
Yesterday, after the death of a soldier who was shot in the Nad-e Ali area of Helmand in Afghanistan, the number of death is now reachs 100 for the UK. The British soldier hasn’t been named yet, but family and friends have been informed.
It happened only after the body of the 99th soldier dead has been flown back. Acutally AS John Amer, 30, of the 30th Nasser from Sunderland, wounded as he went to help his colleague who had been hurt in another explosion earlier.
Air Chief Marshal Sir Jock Stirrup, chief of the defence staff said, this year was a particulary challenging one.
As the result of this announce, Bob Ainsworth, the defence secretary joined the head of the army for calling the public not only to judge the casualties of the campaign in Afghanistan.
General Sir David Richards said that this judgement devalued the “tremendous efforts” of the troops.
The chief of the Defence staff Air Chief Marshal Sir John Stirrup said that the efforts “have bought security” on the Helmond and that the army is bulding the real bases for the Afghanistan.
Apparently, according to Mr Ainsworth, the defance secretary, there was a real progress in the troops too. He said that the Afghanistan compaign was vital for the UK security and that people have to understand their presence in the country.
Besides Mr Brown, the Prime Minister said last month that 500 soldiers will be added to the troops. The UK deployment will reach now 10,000. General Sir David Richards said Mr Brown, had finally started to get the importance of the project
However, the Stop the War coalition repeated that for them, it’s an unecessary war...

Le 100è mort britannique en Afghanistan
Hier, le stade des 100 morts à été dépassé après la mort d’un soldat tué dans la région de Nad-e Ali dans la province de Helmand en Afghanistan. L’identité du défunt n’a pas encore été rendue publique, mais sa famille et ses amis ont été récemment prévenus.
La mort du soldat est arrivée seulement quelque temps après le retour du corps du quatre-vingt dix-neuvième soldat, John Amer , 30 ans, du trentième régiment de Sunderland tué en voulant porter secours à un de ses camarades touché par une autre explosion.
Le général Jock Stirrup, chef de la défense a avoué une année éprouvante pour les soldats.
Après la mort de ce soldat, le Secrétaire à la Défense Bob Ainsworth, a demandé lui aussi aux Britanniques de ne pas considérer uniquement les pertes. Le général David Richards a ajouté qu’un tel jugement dévalorisait les incroyables efforts dont déployés par les troupes.
Le général Stirrup a expliqué que ces sacrifices avaient permis d’apporter la sécurité dans la région de Helmond et que l’armée était en train de construire de solides bases pour le pays.
D’après M. Ainsworth, cette guerre était aussi essentielle pour la sécurité de la Grande-Bretagne et leur présence sur le terrain devait être bien comprise.
M. Brown, le Premier Ministre a d’ailleurs annoncé le mois dernier que 500 soldats viendraient s’ajouter aux troupes déjà présentes . Le nombre de soldats anglais seraient alors de 10.000. Pour le général David Richard, le Premier Ministre a enfin compris les enjeux et l’importance d’un tel projet.
Cependant, les associations pacifistes ont réaffirmé l’inutilité de cette guerre.

Crash testing riot shields
Last Thursday, whereas Mr. Latham, an Englishman, was sledding in a kayak when policemen on duty rejoined him.
According to a video on Youtube, we can see that they stayed quite a while to enjoy sledding too... with their riot shields. Which did not really please their superintendent, Andrew Murray, who somewhat reprimanded them, but nonetheless admitted the snow had "a habit of bringing out the child in all of us". However, their behavior have had the effect of improving their rigid image of policemen, since the residents of Oxford found their reaction rather friendly and humorous.

La police anglaise s'entraîne pour les JO
Jeudi dernier, alors que M. Latham était tranquillement en train de faire de la luge avec son kayak, il a vu s'approcher de lui un groupe de policiers. Loin de le verbaliser, ceux-ci se sont juste contentés de faire quelques glissades à bord de leur boucliers anti-émeutes, comme le montre la vidéo publiée sur Youtube.
Mis au courant de l'affaire, leur supérieur, Andrew Murray, les a quelques peu réprimandés, admettant néanmoins que la neige avait souvent le pouvoir de nous faire retomber en enfance.
Toutefois, leur comportement a surtout eu pour effet de rafraîchir l'image, jusqu'alors plutôt rigide, des policiers, puisque les habitants d'Oxford ont apprécié leur réaction qu'ils ont trouvé agréable et drôle.

Missing a friend
A little less than a month ago, 28 year-old Casper Flagg disappeared in
Southern England.
On November 28 after spending the night with friends at Moles nightclub, he
was due to join his mother's birthday party the following day.
Unfortunately, he never arrived.
His car was found near the river Avon, and the police decided to start their
investigations in the surroundings.
Police say his sudden disappearance seemed out of character.
However, what is extraordinary in this story is the way his friends rallied
for him.
They organized a march on Saturday 12 December and created a Facebook group
to try to find witnesses and clues.
This could help the police in their inquiry and give some comfort to the
Flagg family.
More than 31,000 people have joined its group to date.

Tous pour un
Il y a environ un mois, un jeune homme de 28 ans, Casper Flagg,
disparaissait à Radstock, dans le sud de l'Angleterre.
C'est semble-t-il dans la matinée du dimanche 29 novembre, que le jeune
homme, après avoir passé la nuit en discothèque, aurait disparu. Il ne
serait ainsi jamais arrivé au repas d'anniversaire de sa mère prévu pour le
lendemain, ce qui a donné l'alerte.
Pour le moment, la police mène ses recherches aux alentours de la rivière
Avon, lieu de découverte de la voiture du disparu. Enquête menée avec
d'autant plus d'ardeur que cette soudaine disparition ne correspondrait pas
au caractère du personnage.
Cependant, ce qui est extraordinaire dans cette histoire, c'est l'importante
mobilisation dont font preuve ses amis et proches. En effet, ceux-ci ont
organisé une marche le samedi 12 décembre, et ont créé un groupe sur
Facebook de façon à pouvoir recueillir le plus d'informations possible sur
les événements qui se seraient déroulés cette nuit là, afin d'aider
l'enquête.
Tout cela apporte beaucoup de réconfort à la famille du jeune homme.
Un peu plus de 31,000 personnes ont à ce jour rejoint le groupe de soutien.

Sex game trial
Two years ago, Meredith Kercher's body was found semi-nude in a pool of
blood.
The British student had been slaughtered...
According to the Police, the defendants, Amanda Knox, 21, her ex-boyfriend
Raffaele Sollecito, 25, and Rudy Guede, 22, would have killed the young girl
during a drug-induced sex game.
Miss Knox and the victim lived in the same flat in Italy on an exchange
program.
However, the three defendants deny the charges since the beginning of the
investigation. That's why, Mr. Guede, who has already received a jail
sentence of 30 years for this murder, will appeal.
But this week began the trial of his associates and the prosecutors have
asked for a life imprisonment sentence.
Unfortunately for Miss Knox, who declared for her defense that the student
was her friend and that she spent all the night of the crime at Mr.
Sollecito's house, he claims that he actually spent the night at home
working on his computer and doesn't remember if his ex-girlfriend remained
all the night in his flat.
It will be up to the judges to decide after seeing the reconstruction of the
scene, showing Miss Knox hit Miss Kercher's head and trying to strangle her
while Mr. Sollecito held her and Mr. Guede raped her.
The verdict is to be pronounced the first week of December.

retrouvé à moitié nu dans une mare de sang... sa gorge avait été tranchée.
Selon la Police, les coupables seraient, Amanda Knox, la jeune Américaine
âgée de 21 ans avec qui la victime partageait un appartement dans le cadre
d'un programme d'échange, l'ancien petit-ami de celle-ci Raffaele Sollecito
et un jeune homme nommé Rudy Guede.
Les accusés n'ont pourtant cessé depuis le début de l'enquête, de clamer
leur innocence et l'un d'entre eux, M. Guede a décidé de faire appel après
avoir été condamné à 30 ans de prison ferme lors d'un premier procès.
Le procureur a requis la prison à vie pour les deux autres accusés dans le
second procès qui débute,
Malheureusement pour Miss Knox, alors qu'elle assurait avoir passé la nuit
du meurtre chez M. Sollecito, celui-ci affirme que si lui a bien passé la
nuit à son appartement pour travailler sur son ordinateur, il n'a aucun
souvenir que son ex-petite amie ait bien passé toute la nuit chez lui.
Le verdict sera prononcé après la reconstitution du crime au cours de la

A Malaysian inmate paid to return home
Two years ago in January 2008, Agnes Woung was condemned for the manslaughter of Hugo Wang, a sixteen month-old boy.
She was paid by his parents to take care of him because they were working hard in a Southport restaurant. However, in January 2007, as she was looking after him at her flat he sufferered head injuries. The Crown heard that she had grabbed him up by his anckles and flung him into a bed or a sofa. Furthermore, the hospital staff where the baby died discovered that he had bruises on his legs, bite marks and burns.
Though, after serving a half of the five years sentence, she was released for good behavior. Thereby the government gave her £4500 to leave England and go back to her home country, Malaysia. The killer left the U.K by plane only two weeks after receiving the money.
The Facilitated Returns Scheme was introduced in October 2006 in order to encourage foreign prisoners to accept deportation and leave the U.K.
David Wood, director of the U.K border Agency’s Criminality and Detention Croup said “Mrs Wong served her required sentence in the U.K and was returned home under the Facilitated Returns Scheme.” He added that the government doesn’t want foreign criminals in the U.K and that the presence of these criminals represents a risk for UK citizens and a tremendous cost for the community. These are the main arguments that justify the facilitated Returns Scheme.
In 2008, a record 5000 foreign criminals were deported to their home country.

Agnes Wong, condamnée en janvier 2008 pour homicide involontaire sur Hugo Wang âgé de seize mois avait été engagée par les parents du petit garçon pour le surveiller et prendre soin de lui pendant qu’ils travaillaient dans un restaurant de Southport dans le Nord de l’Angleterre. Seulement, en janvier 2007 pendant qu’elle le gardait dans son appartement , il reçut une blessure à la tête.
Il fut prouvé au procès qu’elle l’avait pris par les chevilles et jeté sur un lit ou un canapé. De plus l’hôpital où l’enfant est mort, a découvert d’autres blessures comme des ecchymoses sur les bras et des marques de morsures et de brûlures.
Pourtant, après avoir purgé la moitié de sa peine, elle a été libérée pour bonne conduite. De ce fait, le gouvernement lui a donné 4500 livres pour quitter le pays et retourner vivre en Malaisie. La jeune femme est rentrée dans son pays d’origine, deux semaines seulement après avoir reçu l’argent.
Le dispositif pour faciliter les retours avait été mis en place en octobre 2006 pour encourager les prisonniers à retourner dans leur pays d’origine et donc à quitter la Grande-Bretagne.
Selon David Wood, le directeur de l’agence chargée de la délinquance et de la détention en Grande – Bretagne: « Mme Wong a purgé toute sa peine en Grande-Bretagne et a été renvoyée dans son pays d’origine par le dispositif de réintégration. » Il ajoute que le gouvernement ne veut pas de criminels étrangers en Grande-Bretagne et que leur présence représente un risque pour les citoyens du pays et un coût trop élevé pour la communauté. Ce sont les arguments qui ont d’ailleurs justifié la mise en place du programme.

Poor start for thousands of university students
The Students Loans Company (SLC) has revealed that about 175,000 student applications haven’t been processed yet because of IT problems. Actually only 50,000 are said to be still delayed.
The main problems appeared at Student Finance England a subsidiary of the SIC which processed the applications for the first time. Previously, they had always been processed by local authorities, then given to the SLC for payment. But this year, applications were processed very late because of technical problems with the system of scanning applications and they had to be handmade.
Mr. Willets the shadow universities and skills secretary said that three weeks ago, they believed than 50,000 students were affected and now they learn that it could be more than three times this number. About ten thousands students could start their entry in the universities without loans so in hardship because of the government.
The SLC has apologized publicly and has promised to families and students that three quarters of a million students had now their applications accepted and that the rest would be processed as fast as they could.

Le SLC organisme de prêts étudiants a révélé qu’environ 175.000 demandes d’étudiants britanniques n’avaient pas encore été traitées à cause de problèmes informatiques. En fait, seulement 50.000 demandes seraient encore en souffrance .
Les erreurs principales auraient été commises par une filiale du SLC, le Student Finance England qui traitait les demandes pour la première fois. Auparavant, elles avaient toujours été traitées par les autorités locales puis transmises à la SLC pour le versement. Mais cette année, les demandes ont été traitées très tardivement à cause de problèmes techniques liés au scannage des demandes qui avait dû être fait manuellement.
M. Willets, Secrétaire aux Universités de l’opposition conservatrice a déclaré qu’il y a de ça trois mois, il pensait que seulement 50.000 étudiants avaient été affectés mais qu’il pourrait y en avoir trois fois plus. Des dizaines de milliers d’étudiants pourraient entrer à l’université sans prêt et donc dans des conditions difficiles à cause du gouvernement.
Le SLC s’est excusé publiquement et a promis aux familles et aux étudiants que les trois-quarts du million d’étudiants avaient vu maintenant leurs demandes acceptées et que le reste serait traité aussi vite que possible.

Mais cette année, les demandes ont été traitées très tardivement à cause de problèmes techniques liés au scannage des demandes qui avait dû être fait manuellement.
M. Willets, Secrétaire aux Universités de l’opposition conservatrice a déclaré qu’il y a de ça trois mois, il pensait que seulement 50.000 étudiants avaient été affectés mais qu’il pourrait y en avoir trois fois plus. Des dizaines de milliers d’étudiants pourraient entrer à l’université sans prêt et donc dans des conditions difficiles à cause du gouvernement.
Le SLC s’est excusé publiquement et a promis aux familles et aux étudiants que les trois-quarts du million d’étudiants avaient vu maintenant leurs demandes acceptées et que le reste serait traité aussi vite que possible.
