Margaret Thatcher hospitalized
Margaret Thatcher, the former British Prime Minister from 1979 to 1990, was admitted in hospital for precautionary tests for 3 or 4 days while being treated for an infection. Last week, she couldn't celebrate her 85th birthday in Downing street, because she hadn't recovered from an illness.
Prime minister, David Cameron wished her a speedy recovery. And her former aide, Gerarld Howarth said : « we all wish her well and are sorry we didn't see her last week ». She was taken to Cromwell Hospital, in London, on tuesday.
Her son, Mark Thatcher went to see her on Wednesday and he said his mother was doing well and would stay in hospital for several days. In March 2008, she had also spent the night in hospital as a precaution.

Margaret Tchatcher, premier ministre britannique de 1979 à 1990, a été admise à l'hôpital pour des tests de précaution, pour 3 ou 4 jours tout en étant traitée pour une infection. La semaine dernière, elle n'a pas pu célébré son 85ème anniversaire à Downing street, car elle n'avait pas complétement récupéré d'une maladie.
Le premier ministre David Cameron lui a souhaité un prompt rétablissement.
Son ancien assistant, Gerarld Howarth a déclaré : « Nous lui souhaitons de bien se rétablir et nous sommes désolés de ne pas l'avoir vue la semaine dernière ». Elle a été emmenée à l'hôpital de Cromwell, à Londres, mardi.
Son fils, Mark Tahtcher est venu la voir vendredi et a dit qu'elle allait bien et qu'elle devrait rester à l'hôpital pendant plusieurs jours. En mars 2008, elle avait déjà été malade et avait passé la nuit à l'hôpital.

One ounce of hope
About a week ago, a volcano erupted in Iceland and the sky has been closed since .
The eruption produced a huge volcanic ash cloud that would cause an accident if planes crossed it, and as the cloud is spreading south and east towards the UK, its air traffic is paralyzed and 63,000 flights have been cancelled.
It would have been less disastrous if it was not spring break as fewer people would be disturbed by this temporary stop of the air transport. 6.8m UK passengers saw their holidays spoiled, either because they could not reach their destination, or because they could not return home. The Association of British Travel Agents said about 150, 000 British are still stranded,.
It is therefore with pleasure that residents and businesses in the United Kingdom have learned of the partial reopening of the airspace.
However, airlines continue to recommend their clients stay informed on their airline's website.
My opinion: This event is a hard blow for the citizens of the Island but also for the airlines. Indeed, although the eruption of this volcano has had a major impact on the holidays of our neighbors and on the economy of the travelers blocked abroad, it also had one rather important on the economy of these companies, since they find themselves assailed by a tide of dissatisfied passengers, each was demanding some attention. Furthermore, since the beginning of this drama they were constantly losing money because the British have stopped to reserve seats and that on the contrary they have tried to be paid off. That's why I think that for the UK as for many countries this cloud of ash is a real disaster, so they see all an enormous partial reassurance in this reopening of the sky.

Vols d'espoir

Il y a environ une semaine, le volcan islandais Eyjafjöll est entré en activité dégageant depuis un terrible nuage noir, empli de cendres et de roches volcaniques et rendant de ce fait tout transport aérien impossible dans plusieurs parties du monde, dont le Royaume-Uni.
Cette paralysie du trafic aérien aurait pu quelques semaines plus tôt n'inquiéter que peu de personnes,
or elle est tombée juste au début des vacances de printemps gâchant ainsi les congés de 6, 8 millions de Britanniques du fait de l'annulation de 63 000 vols.
D'après l'ABTA (Association des Agences de Voyage britanniques),150,000 Britanniques seraient dans l'incapacité de rentrer dans leur pays.
Si c'est avec joie que toute la population a appris la réouverture partielle de l'espace aérien, les compagnies aériennes ont quant à elles continué à recommander à leurs clients de se tenir informés de tout rebondissement possible sur leurs sites web.
Mon opinion: Cette évènement est un coup dure pour la population de l'île, comme pour ses compagnies aérienne. En effet, bien que l'éruption de ce volcan est eu un grand impact sur les vacances de nos voisins et sur l'économie des voyageurs bloqués à l'étranger, elle en a aussi eu un, plutôt important, sur l'économie de ces compagnies. Car il faut ajouté que suite à ce séisme, celles-ci se sont retrouvées assaillies par une marée de voyageurs mécontent, réclamant chacun toute leur attention. De plus, depuis le début de ce drame eux aussi n'ont de cesse de perdre de l'argent puisque les anglais ne réservent plus de places mais au contraire cherchent se faire rembourser. Je pense donc que pour le Royaume-Uni comme pour beaucoup de pays ce nuage de cendre est une vrai catastrophe, ainsi voient-ils tous un énorme soulagement en cette réouverture partiel du ciel.

First misstep of Tory Lib-Dem coalition

David Laws, treasury chief secretary resigns after admitting he had claimed £40 000 in taxpayers’ expenses to rent on a room for his long-term partner.
Friday evening, Laws, first treasury chief secretary of the coalition government admitted using Commons expenses to rent a room in two properties owned by his partner James Lundie who works for a public relations firm. He agreed to pay £40,000 back and to refer himself to the parliamentary standards commissioner. Since 2006, parliamentary rules have banned MP’s from” leasing accommodation to a partner”. Laws explained “ At no point did I consider myself to be in breach of the rules which in 2009 defined partner as ‘ one of a couple…who although not married to each other or civil partners, are living together and treat each other as spouses’. He said "Although we were living together we did not treat each other as spouses – for example, we do not share bank accounts and indeed have separate social lives. However, I now accept this was open to interpretation … I regret this deeply." He added that he just wanted to preserve his private life and that his motivation hadn’t been to maximize profit. Prime Minister David Cameron’s spokesman said the knew the situation and agreed with Laws’ decision.

Mr. Laws has sent today a resignation letter to Cameron. He explains that he couldn’t carry on with the crucial affairs of the budget and deal with the revelations and that it was his own decision. It is the first resignation to hit the coalition government just three weeks after it was formed. Cameron said: “In your short time at the Treasury, you have made a real difference; setting the government on the right path to tackle the deficit which poses such a risk to our economy […] I’ll hope that, in time, you will be able to serve again.” It was announced that the Lib Dem Scottish Danny Alexander will take his place.

My point of view: It’s the first misstep for the new Lib-Dem coalition government and probably not the last.

Le premier faux-pas du nouveau gouvernement de coalition

Le ministre du budget du Royaume-Uni a annoncé sa démission après avoir avoué qu’il avait perçu, en tant que député, des indemnités pour la location d’un logement pour son compagnon.

Vendredi soir, David Laws, ministre du budget du nouveau gouvernement de coalition a admis avoir perçu des notes de frais en tant que député pour la location d’un logement destiné à son compagnon James Lundie qui travaille dans les relations publiques. Il a accepté de rembourser ces notes de frais s’élevant à £40,000 et de se présenter devant la commission d’éthique du parlement. Depuis 2006, les règles du parlement interdisaient de « louer un logement pour le compte d’un conjoint.» Laws a expliqué qu’il ne s’était considéré en aucun cas contrevenir à la loi qui en 2009 définissait les conjoints comme ‘ un membre d’un couple, partenaires mariés ou non, qui se considèrent comme époux.’ Il a déclaré : « bien que nous vivions ensemble, nous ne nous traitions en aucun cas comme des époux- par exemple, nous avions des comptes en banque et des vies sociales séparés. Cependant, je comprends que cela puisse porter à confusion et je le regrette vivement. » Il a ajouté qu’il voulait juste protéger sa vie privée et que sa motivation n’était pas de tirer profit de sa fonction. Le porte parole de David Cameron a annoncé que le premier ministre était au courant de la situation et était en accord avec la décision de Laws.

M. Laws a envoyé aujourd’hui sa lettre de démission à Mr Cameron. Il y explique qu’il ne pouvait s’occuper d’affaires budgétaires cruciales et gérer la déferlante médiatique qui a suivi ces révélations et que c’était une décision personnelle. C’est la première démission qui frappe le gouvernement de coalition après sa formation il y a trois semaines. Cameron a déclaré : « Dans votre court mandat aux affaires budgétaires, vous avez fait une grande différence ; vous avez placé le gouvernement sur la bonne voie pour combattre le déficit qui menace notre économie.[…]J’espère qu’au moment venu, vous serez prêt à rejoindre le gouvernement. » Il a été annoncé que le libéral démocrate écossais Danny Alexander prendrait sa place.

Mon point de vue : C’est donc le premier faux-pas du nouveau gouvernement et probablement pas le dernier.

Fighting flames

On Monday morning, an explosion caused a major fire at a chemicals factory in Linthwaite and caused deep concern among residents of the area.
The factory produced toxic and dangerous chemicals which could have a terrible impact on the environment and on the health of the population.
Some schools and highways were closed for the day and residents were advised to stay at home because of the risk of air pollution. Moreover, for the safety of the residents and that of their animals, it would be preferable, according to the authorities that all activities downstream the River Colne are interrupted and it's highly recommended to consult a doctor at the slightest respiratory disorder or other health problem.
Besides, it took more than 150 firefighters and no less than 30 of their trucks to extinguish the fire.
Huddersfield faced “one of the most serious chemical fires” a fire service spokesman said.
The causes of the explosion have not yet been determined.
My opinion: thanks to the fear that this fire inspired to the residents some new rules will be set up to provide better security to the factory and prevent another fire.

Les feux de la peur

C'est l'explosion d'une usine de produits chimiques à Linthwaite dans le Nord de l'Angleterre qui a illustré ce début de semaine et plongé dans la peur les habitants vivant à proximité du sinistre.

En effet, l'usine contenait des produits chimiques dangereux et toxiques qui pourraient avoir un sérieux impact sur l'environnement de la région environnante et dégrader considérablement la santé de ses résidents.
C'est d'ailleurs pour cette raison que plusieurs écoles et autoroutes ont été fermées, et qu'il a été conseillé à la population de ne pas s'aventurer à l'extérieur, afin de ne pas inhaler certains gaz toxiques pouvant s'être mélangés à l'air.
De même, pour la sécurité des habitants et celle des animaux, toute activité en aval de la rivière Colne a été suspendue, et au moindre problème respiratoire les victimes devaient faire appel au plus vite à un médecin.

Par ailleurs, il aura fallu l'intervention de plus de 150 pompiers et pas moins de 30 de leurs camions pour parvenir à maîtriser puis à éteindre l'incendie.
Mais si à ce jour, si le comté du Yorkshire de l'Ouest à su faire face à « l'un des plus graves incendies chimiques», selon un porte-parole des services d'incendies, les causes de l'explosion n'ont pas encore pu être déterminées.

Mon opinion: il est heureux que ce feu n'ait fait aucune victime, la sécurité de l'usine sera renforcée dans cette usine mais aussi sans doute dans d'autres et ainsi de nombreux autres incidents pourront être évités.
