G8 Money for the Arab Spring

Last Thursday and Friday, the G8 summit took place in Deauville, with the eight most powerful countries in the world: the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, the United States, Russia, Japan, Canada and France. The main focus of this G8 was the Arab Spring.

David Cameron gave a press conference concerning the recent events in Libya.
The leaders of the eight nations have agreed on the fact that there was no hope or Libya with Gaddafi in power. The war against this country is to move to a "new phase" said Obama. Indeed yesterday, the British government sent new combat helicopters to Libya.
Moreover, Sarkozy and Cameron have planned to go together to Benghazi, the stronghold of the Libyan rebellion. The Franco-British initiative has not yet been scheduled but the two leaders will go there in "due course" said Sarkozy.
By contrast, the countries of North Africa will receive a $ 80 billion assistance package. This money is intended to Tunisia, Egypt, Morocco and Jordan. These countries have large current economic difficulties, given that revolutions have greatly affected tourism, which was the largest source of currency in those countries. The United Kingdom is the country that gave the largest sum of money, ie £ 110 million over four years. This is intended to strengthen justice, reduce corruption, promote democratic parties and economic development. David Cameron said: "It is very important to help these countries avoid a return to authoritarian regimes, as well as conflicts and terrorism." G8 commitment is to devote 0.7% of GDP to help foreign countries.

Opinion: Governments prefer to send money to Maghreb instead of Libya for fear that the money be diverted. It is a shame because the population also badly needs the money. I hope that if Gaddafi quits, states will review their decision and help the Libyan people.

Queen's highly symbolic visit to Ireland

On May 17th, for the first time since its independence, a British monarch will visit the Republic of Ireland. George V, the present queen's grandfather, was indeed the last British monarch to visit Ireland almost 100 years ago in July 1911.

This four-day royal visit from Tuesday will herald better relationships between Ireland and the United Kingdom in spite of fears of protests by dissident Republicans. The government has set up a huge security operation to make sure the whole royal trip unfolds without a hitch.

According to Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny it is "the beginning of a new relationship between Ireland and Britain as we face a very challenging future in Europe and beyond". Actually, the Queen's visit is truly expected by most people as the symbol of the cement of Anglo-Irish relations after a turbulent past and a boost for the country after the economy imploded during the credit crunch. And, as Enda Kenny said, the Queen would get a "very warm reception" from the "vast majority" of Irish people.

Invited by Irish President Mary Mcleese, her Majesty and Prince Philip are due to visit Trinity College Dublin, the National War Memorial Gardens in Islandbridge and Croke Park Stadium which are ''sensitive sites'' but ''appropriate and sending out a great message of healing of the past and getting together to face the challenges of the future."

However, The Royal trip in Ireland will be, for Elisabeth II, one the shortest of her 59-years-reign, but it will in all probability be the one that will stay in memories.

My opinion

I think that as the Queen of a country as powerful as the United Kingdom, it is about time for Elisabeth II to make a visit in the nearest country from the UK after having visited 129 countries.

For sure, it is really time for those two countries to renew links, because I really think that they could create a powerful alliance.

Those two nations have ignored or been hostile to each other because of history. Now they just should remember history to be sure to preserve their nations from past errors.

A step toward Scottish Independence

Last Thursday municipal elections were held in England (except in London), while voters also cast their ballots for the Welsh assembly and the Scottish assembly.

In England, as expected, the Liberal Democrat Party, completely discredited after its alliance with the Conservative Party was thrashed. The Conservative Party, lost some seats to the Labour Party favour, but registered a little bit more votes thanks to its alliance with the Lib Dems. However, the won towns are generally smaller than the Labour’s ones.

The Labour won several major communes, like Sheffield, the 8th city of the country. From now on, there are about thirty communes controlled by the Party and eight hundred more advisers. Besides, the Labour Party wrested new communes from its adversaries.
In Wales, the Welsh Labour Party led the way with 30 seats and keeps the upper hand. The Liberal Democrats Party won only a seat in the east whereas the Labour Party prevailed in the south and in the north east. Regionalists lost some seats but keep the west anyway.
Finally, in Scotland, the SNP, the Scottish National Party, won a historic victory in regional elections: they obtained the absolute majority of the Welsh parliament seats. The party, which supports the organisation of a referendum about independence, got 69 of 129 seats.
This increased of pro-independence support was gained at the expense of the Labour Party, which generally records good results in Scotland. Therefore, the Labour lost 10 seats in the Parliament, one of the worst votes for the Labour for 80 years. The Conservative Party conceded five seats and the Liberal Democrats Party 13.

My opinion:
So the Scottish people are thus close to their independence but, I think, that they will have to go through several stages.
The first one would be to obtain the agreement of the Scottish Parliament to organize a referendum, which will engender negotiations between the Scottish and British governments. The second would be the referendum in itself and the third would be the negotiations, because they have to share the national debt and the oil of the North Sea, and especially negotiate the admission of Scotland in the European Union. Finally, after these three stages, it would be necessary that Scots vote on the negotiated agreements.
Finally, the admission of a new country in Europe is not yet on the agenda …

Ines.

Phew! They said yes!

That's it, they finally said yes. The long-awaited wedding of Kate and
William took place Friday, in London. It was a lavish wedding with 1900
guests. The newly-weds first moved to Westminster Abbey for the ceremony,
then rode a carriage drawn by four horses to Buckingham Palace, where they
exchanged kisses on the balcony, in front of thousands of citizens.
The procession included 160 riders. The bride was beautiful, with a long
white robe and a two-meter train, held by her sister, who was also her best
man. William, himself, wore the red uniform of the Irish Guard, alongside
Harry, his brother and best man. The ceremony was broadcast in 180
countries, with 2 billion viewers (9 million in France).
The dinner was held in Buckingham and followed by a private party with 300
guests at the expense of the Queen. Elizabeth II named Kate and William,
Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, which is the highest title of English
nobility.
It was a very important day for the British. During the procession, a woman
said:
"It's a real fairy tale , it's the best day of my life, it's as if time had
stopped. "
To ensure safety, there were 5,000 police and helicopters flying over the
city. Later in
the evening, an unofficial party was organized through Facebook. People just
wanted to
have fun and celebrate the marriage in their own way. But the police failed
to control
the gathering, 21 people were arrested and a policeman injured. Apart from
this incident,
everything proceeded as planned.
It is difficult not to compare this wedding to that of Charles and Diana, 30
years earlier. But, Kate and William have been together since college
whereas Diana and Charles had known each other for just a little while.
There were 13 years between Charles and Diana, who was only 19 years old at
her wedding, while Kate and William are both 28 years old. Charles and Diana
were married in St Paul's Cathedral, while Kate and William's ceremony was
held in Westminster Abbey. Diana's marriage was attended by 750 million
viewers. Finally, Kate was very comfortable and cheerful, unlike Diana who
had a shy smile.

My opinion : It was a long awaited marriage because the English are very
attached to the two princes owing the brutal death of their mother, who was
very popular in Britain and is still fondly remembered. That's why I think
that this marriage was well attended and supported. Moreover, William is the
heir to the throne.

… and they lived happily ever after and they had a lot of children ? … Time
will tell.

Ouf ! Ils se sont dit oui !

Ça y est, ils se sont enfin dit oui. Le mariage tant attendu de Kate et
William a eu lieu vendredi, à Londres.

A part cet

A computer engineer of the British Airways jailed for 30 years

The 20th March 2011

A computer engineer, who worked for the British Airways company, was given for thirty years of jailed to prepare an attack in a plane.
Actually, Rajib Karim, a 31 years-old Bangladeshi, was found guilty, in the end of February, of trying to put a bomb aboard of a plane about to take off in the Unites States. An American-Yemeni imam, Anwar al-Awlaki, who is recognized by Washington like one of Al-Qaida main leader, helped him.
During the computer engineer trial, the judge David Calvert-Smith declared that he came in Great Britain to lead terrorist attack. He also emphasized, during his conviction the last 28th February, that Rajib Karim used his position in the company to try to blow up the plane, and show his religious extremism attachment.
The young man was arrived in the United Kingdom in 2006 with his family. Karim was on the point of getting his British passport, which would ensure him to travel abroad and launch attacks. However, in February 2010, he was arrested at the call centre post office of the company in Newcastle.
According to the prosecution, Rajib Karim was contacted since 2009, with Anwar al-Awlaki, who had given some information and encouraged the Bangladeshi man to make enquiries about the best way to smuggle a parcel or a person carrying it aboard the plane for the USA.
However, Karim denied during his trial that he organised an attack, and assured that if he came in England, it was only to cure his son affected by a bowel cancer. He however admitted participated in an Islamic organisation forbidden in the country and sent some money for the terrorists.

My opinion

I find this condemnation of 30 years fair, and I hope that the time he will spend in jail will make him think about his failed action. I do not understand, why this man wanted to do this attack: maybe that this imam encourage him to put the bomb, or maybe, he thinks that he have to help God to punish other sinners.
However, he would know that kill somebody is a sin, and that the first person he has to punish would be he!

Seven injured in a hospital attack

15th January 2011

Five patients and two female employees at Newham General Hospital, London, have been attacked by an other patient at 12.40am.

A patient, Consuela Camacho, aged in her ate 60s, has been seriously injured on the head after the attack at the early hours. She is now in stable condition after have been said ''critical'' on the morning, according to a Scotland Yard spokesman.

Four other patients suffered minor injuries. It is thought they were asleep when they were attacked. Two female staff have also been hurt while restraining the man.

Police said a 22-year-man, a patient of the hospital, has been arrested in custody under 24 hour guard.

The hospital said an investgation was under way and confirmed that neither drugs nor alcohol were factors of incident.

Scotland Yard said staff called police shortly after 12.40am during the incident.

Witness said the man hit Consuela Camacho in the face with a metal bar. The attack stopped when the patient in the next bed shouted at him, who then turned his attention to her, witness said. After hitting his head against a wall, the assailant striked an approaching nurse with his metal bar.

Nurses called three times for security personnel during the the attack

It is believed the man who carried out the attack had mental health problems.

A statement from Newham University Hospital NHS Trust confirmed the Metropolitan Police were investigating an incident

It said it related to a patient who had been admitted to hospital, five more patients and two clinical members staff.

My opinion

This attack throw back the debate on hospital security. Lots of experts say that the actual system is not apprpriate. An attack like this put the security services to the test whereas they are not always really prepared to face situtaion like those. Secondly, the surity doesn't always intervene as in this attack during which nurses had to call security three times.

It's a question of budget. Because of the recession, some employes lose their job and hospital miss staff. So security guards are not always qualified.

In my opinion, patients who are admitted in the hospital need treatment AND security when they need it.

Murder Bollywood style

Sunday the 9th of January 2011

A 31-year old bridegroom British citizen of Indian descent, is suspected to have organised the murder of his wife last November during their honeymoon in Cape, South-Africa.Anni Hindocha, a beautiful 28-year old Swede of Indian extraction, was found at 7 am, a bullet in the nape of the neck, on the back seat of a Volkswagen, in Khayelitsha, a black township notorious for its dangerousness. Her bag, her telephone, a bracelet of diamonds and her Armani watch were missing and according to the police there was no rape.

Anni Hindosha died 2 weeks after a traditional wedding celebrated in Mumbai, in India. Her husband, Shrien Dewani, a businessman living in Bristol, gave the alarm in the night and explained to the police that they were victim of carjacking in the taxi driving them back to the hotel.

They were ambushed by two men who forced first the taxi driver then Mr Dewani out of the car unharmed before driving away with Anni Dewani still inside. Her body was found on the back seat of the abandoned car the following day with multiple gunshot wounds.

The next day the investigation of the South African police began and quickly the two men were arrested and charged with murder. The taxi driver was the accomplice of the criminals, and to reduce his prison sentence, he claimed that Mr Dewani had paid him and his accomplices £1,400 to kill his wife in a fake carjacking.

It isn’t the first time that a tourist is assassinated in South Africa. But this time, many facts seem to be shady. Why did criminals spare the husband? Why did he leave South Africa quickly and hire a lawyer? South African authorities launched a formal extradition request for Shrien Dewani and the investigation is still in progress.

My personal comment

I found this news item really bizarre. When a couple doesn’t get on well, they should split up. I think that if the husband is guilty, he should have had strong reasons to do that.

Maybe, Mr Dewani , has watched many bollywood films and was affected by their unbelievable screenplays . That’s why he built up this macabre script.
