The shady dealings of UK spies
A report in the Guardian written thanks to Edward Snowden’s documents explained that between 2008 and 2010, the GCHQ of the British spy agency, intercepted millions of images from Yahoo users around the world. This agency, situated in Cornwall, has to monitor British telecommunications and their actions are in accordance with the law. The operation is called “Optic Nerve” and was aided by the US National Security Agency.
During six month in 2008, 1.8 million of users’ images were gathered. The British collected all of this thanks to the submarine cables, where most of the Internet information travels, to copy it on GCHQ network server. This British spy agency was founded to fight terrorism and nuclear proliferation. However “Optic Nerve” wasn’t created to intercept particular communications but to copy massively data. Moreover they noticed that some of their targets used Yahoo chat to communicate. For them it was also the occasion to try a new technology of facial recognition. Therefore the GCHQ has images of millions of innocent people.
Unfortunately sexually explicit images were saved in the network server. The agency said that a surprising number of people use webcam conversations to show intimate parts of their body. According to them between 3% and 11% of the images intercepted represent naked people. Sometimes it appears to be used for broadcasting pornography because on Yahoo chat, more than one person is allowed to view the webcam communication.
Yahoo reacted and said that it’s a “completely unacceptable privacy violation” and that it represents a new level of violation of their users’ privacy and they will call the government to reform surveillance laws.
Opinion: the operation “Optic Nerve” is unacceptable. Imagine you were chatting with a webcam on Yahoo and a British spy agency aided by an American national agency intercepts images of your conversation. And the worst is that they violate your private life only to try new technologies and copy images of innocent people who have nothing to do with terrorism. Although they claim it’s legal but in fact this is not, just outrageous and revolting. Finally they acted like the NSA in the USA.

Un article dans le Guardian (écrit grâce aux documents d’Edward Snowden) explique qu’entre 2008 et 2010, la GCHQ, une agence d’espions britanniques, a intercepté des millions d’images d’utilisateurs Yahoo partout dans le monde. Cette agence, située en Cornouailles est chargée de surveiller les télécommunications britanniques dans un cadre légal. L’opération est appelée « Nerf Optique » et est appuyée par la NSA, l’Agence de Sécurité Nationale américaine.
Pendant six mois en 2008, 1.8 million d’images des utilisateurs ont été réunies grâce aux câbles sous-marins où transitent la majorité des informations sur Internet, puis copiées sur le serveur de la GCHQ. Cette agence d’espions britanniques a été fondée pour lutter contre le terrorisme et la prolifération nucléaire. Cependant « Nerf Optique » n’a pas été créé afin d’intercepter des communications en particulier, mais pour copier massivement les données.
Ces services ont remarqué que certaines de leurs cibles utilisent le chat Yahoo pour communiquer. Pour eux, c’était également l’occasion de tester une nouvelle technologie de reconnaissance faciale. De ce fait, la GCHQ possède des images de million de personnes innocentes.
Des images sexuelles explicites ont été sauvegardées sur le serveur. L’agence a affirmé qu’un nombre surprenant de personnes utilisaient les conversations webcam pour montrer des parties intimes de leur corps. Selon eux, entre 3% et 11% des images interceptées représentent des personnes nues, parfois pour diffuser de la pornographie car sur les chats Yahoo plus d’une personne peut voir la communication webcam.
Yahoo a réagi en déclarant qu’il s’agissait d’une « violation totalement inacceptable de la vie privée», que cela représentait un nouveau niveau de violation et qu’ils allaient faire appel au gouvernement pour réformer les lois de surveillance.
Opinion: Je suis totalement d’accord avec Yahoo : l’opération « Nerf Optique » est inacceptable. Imaginez-vous en train de chatter par webcam sur Yahoo et une agence d’espions britannique (GCHQ), aidée par une agence nationale américaine (NSA) intercepte des images de votre conversation. Et le pire, c’est que cette violation de votre vie privéene sert qu’à tester de nouvelles technologies et copier des images de personnes innocentes qui n’ont rien à voir avec le terrorisme. La légitimité d’une telle initiative parait très contestable. C’est juste effarant et révoltant. Au final, ils agissent comme la NSA aux États-Unis.
