Stafford Hospital chief nurse struck off

         Janice Harry was the director of the nurses at Stafford Hospital. Five years ago, she had received a caution for failing in her role. She was accused of intimidation and endangering patient life by keeping fewer workers than the section needed.

         Ms Harry denies the accusations, like the lack of staff, the poor hygiene of the department and also attacks on patient dignity. She also denies the staff’s accusations about “the stressful and unpleasant atmosphere”.

         This scandal surfaced after the publication of a report by the Healthcare Commission in March 2009. The regulator said that the conditions were appalling. An investigation showed that many more deaths were recorded there than other hospitals.

         Janice Harry will be struck off the nursing register.

OPINION: I think it’s scandal that things like this could happen. Stricter supervision of the medical staff should be introduced because they have the patient’s lives in their hands.

In a French hospital, another scandal erupted about infants who died because of a problem in their food.

         Janice Harry dirigeait les infirmières à l’hôpital de Stafford. Il y a cinq ans, elle avait reçu un avertissement pour manquement à son rôle. Elle était accusée d’intimidation et de mise en danger de la vie des patients parce qu’elle maintenait son service en sous-effectif.

         Mrs Harry rejette les nombreuses accusations portées contre elle comme le manque de personnel, d’hygiène et de propreté du service mais aussi les atteintes à la dignité des patients et également les accusations du personnel à propos de l’atmosphère stressante et déplaisante.

         Le scandale a éclaté suite à la publication du rapport de la commission de santé de mars 2009. Le régulateur y indiquait que les conditions dans son service étaient épouvantables. Une enquête a montré qu’on y recensait beaucoup plus de décès que dans les autres hôpitaux.

         Janice Harry sera radiée du registre des infirmières.

OPINION : Je pense que c’est un scandale que des choses pareilles puissent arriver. Le personnel médical devrait être contrôlé plus étroitement puisqu’ils ont la vie de leurs patients entre les mains.

Un autre scandale s’est produit dans un hôpital français où des nourrissons sont morts à cause d’un problème dans leur nourriture.
